South Peace Chapter Hosts Tumber Ridge "Wind Enery Forum" - November 27, 2007

On Tuesday November 27 the South Peace Chapter of the BCSEA hosted a wind energy forum in Tumbler Ridge B.C.

BCSEA members Valerie Gilson of Peace Energy Cooperative and Colleen Brown of Aeolis Wind Power Corp spoke to about 20 Tumbler Ridge residents about wind energy and it's development in the Northeast. It was a positive event where people could learn about wind energy, ask questions and voice concerns about impacts on their environment.

South Peace BCSEA Chair Brings "Climate Change Showdown" Program to Students

Dawson Creek Daily:

Update from the Chair - October 18, 2007

Cheryl Shuman, Chair of BCSEA South Peace, is excited to report that she is going to take the Climate Change Showdown into 10 classrooms this fall. Cheryl has been speaking with members of Dawson Creek city council, and has been advised that the City may be able to donate a prize to her Climate Change Showdown efforts.

Cheryl also attended a Climate Change Workshop hosted by the City Of Dawson Creek on September 11th. She says that she "always like these events for the networking opportunities, and hearing about our city's efforts is a great bonus". Cheryl reports that she sat at the same table as the Director of Instruction for the local school district, so she was able to talk to him about the Climate Change Showdown. Many people who attended think it is key to teach the children about alternatives and solutions to the climate change issue. For more information, check out www.planningforpeople.ca.

Cheryl was a strong BCSEA presence at the Keepers of The Water II event in Fort St. John, September 27, 28 and 29. She sat in the trade fair for most of the event talking to people about Sustainable Energy and solutions to climate change, but she did manage to catch a few presentations during the conference. Cheryl signed up two BCSEA members and handed out a lot of BCSEA brochures. She has personally invited the District of Chetwynd, District of Tumbler Ridge, Village of Pouce Coupe and The West Moberly First Nations to join BCSEA. Let's hope they take her up on that!

Cheryl also found time to give a speech as a BCSEA panelist at the October 10 and 11 Northeast Communities Coal Forum in Tumbler Ridge, on "The Future Of Coal Fired Power in BC". Other panelists included Bob Stobbs ED for the Canadian Clean Power Coalition, Brad Hope from Save The Similkameen, David Fawcett from Hillsbourough Resources, Alf Hartling, senior geologist with MEMPR and Bruce Muir, senior planner with the West Moberly First Nations. Cheryl says "I knew that there were experts on the panel that would discuss the technongies of coal fired power and carbon capture, so I spoke minimally about that, and instead I decided to speak on behalf of the citizens of BC who opposed coal fired power". She received a very postive reception to her speech.

Finally, Cheryl is also looking at launching a Green Drinks event in Dawson Creek. These events have already proven very successful in other parts of the province - such as Victoria - and provide a fun and valuable networking opportunity to environmental enthusiasts.

The BCSEA would like to thank Cheryl and the South Peace Chapter for all the hard work, and encourage other interested South Peace residents to come out to the next South Peace BCSEA meeting and volunteer their time and enthusiasm!
