Hi there,

I am writing to you because I suspect you regard sustainability as paramountbeing critical to our future, and you live in the Rivendale area. Please continue to read on.

Currently when the wind blows in British Columbia, no wind turbines collect its energy. When the sun shines on homes and buildings, few solar panels or water heaters collect its heat. When the tides roll through B.C.'s coastal inlets, no tidal turbines capture their awesome power.

But all this is about to change. The British Columbia Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA), launched in June 2004, is promoting much greater use of renewable energy in B.C..

BC Sustainable Energy Association
BCSEA is a non-profit association of citizens, professionals and practitioners, committed to promoting the understanding, development, and adoption of sustainable energy and energy conservation and efficiency in British Columbia.

Read and learn more about BCSEA by visiting their website (http://www.bcsea.org). Hopefully you too will be inspired to join this growing movement through their online membership service.

The BCSEA, it seems to me, can fill several huge gaps, including:

  1. Unifying the wealth of expertise and enthusiasm that already exists in BC with regards to sustainable energy, and channelling that synergy to influence policy and planning at the federal, provincial and municipal levels;
  2. Acting as a clearinghouse for practical information on sustainable energy at the commercial and residential levels;
  3. Providing a forum for citizens, government and industry to share ideas and initiate action with regards to sustainable energy; and
  4. Establishing the British Columbia’sn citizenry as a leader in renewable, sustainable energy.

Call to action
I recently joined the Association and I am urging you to do the same. The membership fee is a pittance in comparison to what we as a society can gain from clean, renewable forms of energy. Humans are the only living creatures that extract material from the earth, refine it, and return the by-products back to the earth and atmosphere in a non-biodegradable form. We need to mitigate wean ourselves off this behaviour and take pro-active measures to redirect society onto a more sustainable path.

Next Steps
Once As soon as we have 10 members from in the Rivendale area we can establish our own BCSEA Chapter and begin to have real influence on federal, provincial and municipal policy and planning with regards to energy. We would operate under the auspices of the provincial organization, yet would have a great deal of freedom in to achieving pursue sustainable energy objectives at the community level. Please send me a short email when you join BCSEA, and I will keep a contact list of Rivendale members. I will take the lead on organizing our first meeting to move this forward.

Please forward this to anyone else you think may be interested in this initiative. Here is a wonderful opportunity to act locally while thinking globally. It simply makes good sense. The BCSEA website, once again, is http://www.bcsea.org
