Fact of the Month

Quote/Unquote:

"We’re on the threshold of an energy use revolution. If we’re smart, we’ll stay one step ahead of the market and provide the clean energy decade with the tools it needs: solar panels, biomass, wind power, and fuel cells."

On-line Micro-hydro course

Students of the renewable energies must be willing to find their education from a range of available sources. Sustainable private enterprise, such as the very active renewable energy systems distributor Energy Alternatives (Victoria BC) is a good source for current information. Energy Alternatives provides a comprehensive on-line course on Microhydro Systems.

"After Chapter 1 and 2, you should know the basic components of a microhydro system and be able to figure out the size of system required for your lifestyle.

Chapter 3 will help you determine how much potential energy is in your creek. This chapter goes far beyond the typical information given from turbine manufacturers and government agencies, which often ignore the properties and size of the pipeline, which radically changes the power you can produce."

One Sky – Canadian Institute for Sustainable Living
www.onesky.ca

One Sky explores and promotes practical solutions and appropriate technologies to environmental, social and economic challenges. One Sky was started in the year 2000 in Smithers BC, to form an international partnership with Sierra Leone.

RETScreen Course

One Sky, in partnership with BC post-secondary institutions, offers the RETScreen Course to the public. The full name for this Natural Resources Canada tool is Renewable Energy Technologies Screen International Clean Energy Project Analysis Software. Northern Lights College, with the assistance of BC Sustainable Energy Association, the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, and the Canadian Solar Industry (CanSIA), is developing the first provincially-recognized certified Solar Hot Water System Installer course in Canada. This course will provide plumbers, pipefitters, and heating specialists with the training they need to install all types of solar hot water systems. Students will utilize STT100 and STT200 manuals from the Canadian Solar Industry Association (CanSIA), as well as a Northern Lights College manual created specifically for this course which will provide more in-depth information. For qualified candidates this course will lead to Canadian Solar Hot Water System Installer Certification from CanSIA, in addition to a Northern Lights College certificate.

  • WFTR 400 - Solar Thermal Installer
  • PLAT 200 - Plumber Apprenticeship Technical Training Level 2
