Cycling for Everyone: Lessons for Vancouver from the
Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany
Segal Graduate School of Business Building, 500 Granville
St, Vancouver BC
Cities in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany have achieved
high bike shares of travel by making bicycling a safe and
feasible means of transport for everyone: women as well
as men, all age groups, all skill levels, and all income
classes. In his talk, Prof. John Pucher, professor of planning
and public policy at Rutgers University in New Jersey, describes
the approach used in these three countries to promote cycling
for everyone and for all trip purposes. He focuses on six
categories of policies and programs: extensive systems of
separate cycling facilities, intersection modifications
and priority bicycle traffic signals, traffic calming of
neighborhoods, safe and convenient bike parking, coordination
and integration of cycling with public transport, traffic
education and training for both cyclists and motorists,
and traffic laws that favor cyclists and pedestrians. The
key to the success of cycling policies in the Netherlands,
Denmark, and Germany is the coordinated implementation of
this multi-faceted, mutually reinforcing set of policies.
Precisely because the policies are sensitive to the different
needs of different social groups, they also succeed in making
cycling possible for virtually everyone.

The Affordable City: Municipal Support for Community
Land Trusts and Other Models of Shared Equity Homeownership
SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver
BC
There has been a gradual shift in municipal housing policy
in the United States over the past decade. A growing number
of cities are supporting innovative models of homeownership
that permanently protect the publics investment and
permanently preserve the affordability of these homes, one
resale after another. Community land trusts have been the
principal beneficiary of this policy shift, along with limited
equity cooperatives and deed-restricted houses and condominiums.
Speaker: John Emmeus Davis is a partner and co-founder
of Burlington Associates in Community Development LLC, a
national consulting cooperative specializing in the development
of organizations, policies, and projects promoting permanently
affordable, owner-occupied housing. Community land trusts
have been a programmatic focus since the founding of Burlington
Associates in 1993. The firms six partners have helped
to start or to support over 80 CLTs throughout the United
States.
Admission to public lecture is free; reservations are required.
