BCSEA Petition Demands Climate Change Action

VICTORIA, BC--The BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) has submitted over 1700 signatures on petitions demanding that the Federal Government meet Canada's Kyoto commitments on climate change.

"Our petition demonstrates that Canadians want action on climate change," said Bruce Mackenzie, Vice Chair of the Victoria Chapter of the BCSEA. "We hope that we can convince Canada's New Government not to cut and run in the face of this crucial global challenge."

The petition calls upon Parliament:

  • To honour our legal commitment to the Kyoto Treaty, and

  • To further pledge to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions by 30% below the 1990 level by 2020, and to 80% by 2050, as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the State of California have done

Four Members of Parliament have agreed to submit the petitions, including Denise Savoie (NDP - Victoria), Keith Martin (Liberal - Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca), Libby Davies (NDP - Vancouver East) and Pat Martin (NDP - Winnipeg Centre). Current plans are to submit them the week of October 16 to 20. Signatures were collected at public events in Victoria, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.

"It is indicative of the urgency felt around climate change that this petition is catching on across the country. It was picked up independently by a group in Manitoba and they collected 500 signatures from local residents and sent them back to us," said Naomi Devine, Chair of the Victoria Chapter of the BCSEA.

"The Kyoto Protocol is the most credible global agreement for fighting climate change, and there are many policies, initiatives, and investments that can be implemented in order to significantly reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions," said Mr. Mackenzie.

The BCSEA is a non-profit association of citizens, professionals and practitioners, committed to promoting the understanding, development, and adoption of sustainable energy and energy conservation and efficiency in British Columbia.
