The BCSEA Victoria chapter manned a booth at the Luxton Fair in Langford on May 16th and 17th. We have never had a booth at this fair before but we hoped it might be an opportunity to reach new people with our message. The fair is a carnival style fair with rides, and carnival food, games, etc. The fair is very kid oriented and lots of kids of different ages came to our booth to see what we were doing. We had developed some quizzes on sustainability for various ages beforehand and also had some colouring pages based on active transportation and food choices. We had a number of small prizes such as mini flashlights and bouncy balls and we gave every kid a prize after having them either answer a quiz question or colour in something on a colouring sheet for the smaller kids. In many cases parents joined their kids and a number of kids wanted to take home the paper quizzes with them so we hope that we disseminated some information. A number of kids mentioned that some of this information is covered in their science classes at school so that was encouraging. We will also have a booth at the Canada Day Picnic at the Gorge on Canada Day which should be similar so stop by and say hello if you are there.
On other projects, we are trying to see if we can create a “roundtable event” that would be like a “mini Energy Connections” in the fall. We have decided that the topic of the event will be something around sustainable transportation but this project is in its early stages and we are still working on a concise and interesting topic and trying to find panelists for the event. We are also continuing with our eBike charging project working with the University of Victoria. After our hackathon last March, we are trying to figure out good ways to refine the winning designs so a prototype can be built. We are working on trying to create a UVic club which can do this work and to come up with some financing to support students in the club. Alan and Nathan also did a tour at at Camosun College where we hope our prototype can be built.
